There are now three different ways you can earn a high school diploma in the Adult Education program. West Haven Adult High School is open to residents who are at least 17 years old, have not achieved a high school diploma, and are officially withdrawn from high school. New students must be evaluated in the areas of math and reading before they can register for classes.

The Connecticut Adult Virtual High School program provides students enrolled in West Haven’s Adult Education Credit Diploma Program the option to earn credits online. With counselor approval, a student can enroll in Introduction to Online Learning and Academic Courses.

The GED ®  course is designed to prepare students to take the GED® state exam. This program prepares adult learners to pass a four-part computer-based exam to earn a state of Connecticut diploma. Students must be at least 17 years old. Students will be given a placement exam in order to determine which academic areas need to be improved. Upon completion of the placement tests, students will be placed in classes to help them pass state GED® exam.

The NEDP (National External Diploma Program) is an alternate route to earning a high school diploma. It is recommended for students 22 years of age or older. Students are expected to demonstrate a number of life skills through several tasks. Each candidate must also demonstrate an individual skill in an occupational, academic, or specialized area.

Polish your job seeking skills so you can land the job of your dreams. West Haven Adult Education offers courses that can help you to create a professional resume, design a cover letter, and write a thank you for the interview letter. Students can learn all kinds of skills needed to be more professional and to get the job they dream of.

Real Estate Practices and Principles is a course designed to provide a basic understanding of real estate concepts and the real estate business. The course meets the minimum standards as set forth by the Connecticut Real Estate Commission. Completion qualifies the student for application for the State Real Estate Exam to obtain a salesman’s license.

The Certified Nursing Assistant is one of the most popular courses Adult Education offers. This course consists of 100 classroom and clinical hours, but successful completion of this course, and passing the state exam, will enable students to be certified to assist in patient care, and qualify for a job as a certified nurse’s aide. We also have patient care technician and central sterile processing technician courses. There are other medical-related courses in addition to these.

We have bar tending certification course where participants will learn how to identify signs of intoxication and learn Connecticut’s liquor rules, regulations, and laws. This course is required by many states across the nation.

Bus trips are also being offered. See the "bus trips" tab on the right-hand side of this page to find out more.

These are just a few of the many courses and events that the West Haven Adult Education program offers. Our catalog is mailed twice a year, and is featured on this website by clicking here.  West Haven Adult Ed is a member of the Connecticut Association of Adult and Continuing Education (CAACE).
